Introduction
For nearly 98 years, winning an Academy Award, also commonly known as an Oscar, has been viewed as the highest honor in the film industry. However, the Academy Awards have also long been criticized for historically underrepresenting marginalized voices and perpetuating a system that reinforces exclusionary industry norms. In this project, we analyze a (merged) dataset of Oscar nominees and winners from 1928 to 2020 to investigate the patterns and trends that shape what the film industry deems as “best”. We seek to track how race, gender, age, and regional representation have, or haven’t, changed throughout the Academy’s history. Ultimately, our goal is to provide evidence-based insights into whether the Oscars have made progress towards inclusive representation.

Research Questions
We center our research on how the racial, gender, and age makeup of nominees and winners change over time. By looking at both front-of-camera (acting) and behind-the-camera (music, video editing, production) roles, as well as age, we aim to uncover the patterns that reveal who the industry chooses to award.

1) To what extent has the racial distribution of Oscar nominees and winners shifted throughout the Academy’s history? Are the recent increases in racial diversity at the Oscars indicating a permanent shift in industry recognition, or do winners from marginalized groups remain statistical outliers?
2) How has the gender distribution of Oscar winners for non-acting categories changed over time? To what degree do Oscar wins for women and minority groups reflect broader progress in Hollywood hiring, and to what degree do they reveal an Academy bias that persists regardless of the film industry’s current output?
3) How has the “ideal age” for a winning performance evolved over the years, and what does this tell us about who the Academy values at different stages of their lives? Moreover, in what ways do the age distributions of Oscar nominees reveal different expectations for men versus women?
